About Learn Heritage

Introduction

I’m Julie Ricketts, founder of Learn Heritage.

I set up Learn Heritage to use my experience in the heritage sector and in running a successful business to help organisations, developers and building preservation trusts to interpret their heritage assets to achieve their objectives whilst securing community buy-in.

The importance of employing a heritage interpretation professional at the beginning of a development project is essential. By illuminating the heritage value of your assets, I can help you ensure a legacy of people caring for what they identify as a precious resource, together with the additional benefits which result from meaningful placemaking; more visitors, new residents, employment opportunites and creative, thriving communities.

Background

I am an ideas person with interests in many aspects of history, the arts and the built environment. My heritage work and studies have encompassed the History of Education, History of Art, History of Medicine, History of Fashion, History of Architecture and Military and Industrial History.

Visitor Experience

I chose to focus on the visitor experience for my Masters (Distinction) in Museum & Gallery Education, looking at the ways in which people interpret and engage with a heritage site and how they connect with it, feel joy, a sense of wonder and the sensation of travelling back in time.

Regeneration

I am particularly interested in how urban regeneration and the creation of cultural hubs can help bring communities together, create economic opportunity and enrich people’s sense of place and belonging.

Interpretation

From a teaching background, I enjoy helping people understand their surroundings, provoking their curiosity in the unfamiliar and revealing the significance of their local landmarks, to bring meaning to their cultural or environmental resource. I am passionate about preserving local history, by helping people value their heritage, through connecting a site to their own background, prior knowledge and values. I believe in giving a voice and recognition to the forgotten histories of ordinary people, many of whom have achieved extraordinary things.

Events

Through my vintage events business, I feel proud to have been a pioneer, to have seen an opportunity to create a new and entertaining experience in a part of London, which was previously neglected. I have built up close connections and partnerships with many community groups, and have become skilled at building a team and identifying ways to help them develop their own skillsets.

Interests

I enjoy learning about the decorative arts, architecture and engineering.

Current Projects

I am currently fundraising for a community project, which will include a dance performance, historical re-enactors, Royal Artillery history and costume design.
